Njideka Akunyili Crosby

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s live and work space merges love and creativity to highlight the blending of the artist’s personal and professional lives, artistic techniques, and Nigerian and American cultures.

Akunyili Crosby was born in Nigeria and has spent majority of her life living in the United States. Her art reflects the merging of her multi-cultural background through the motifs she uses, but more literally through the blending of artistic techniques, as demonstrated in her piece “Dwellers: Cosmopolitan Ones,” as she uses printed media and acrylic paint to create a unique composition.

CONCEPT

Merging

My visual interpretation of merging originated from the imagery of two parts of one person blending together. Humans tend to label cultures and artistic techniques as binary, in other words, as being completely distinct from one another. The merging of the two parts turned into the Igbo symbol for love, as it also represents merging and is personally meaningful to Akunyili Crosby, as Igbo is her native language.
