Day of the Dead Pavilion

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Aztecs, one of the indigenous people of Mexico, created El Dia de los Muertos about 3,000 years ago to commemorate the lives of the deceased. Although many cultures and religions have various beliefs about what happens when we die, most people see death as the end. This beautiful ceremony emphasizes that we can honor and connect with people even after they leave the land of the living, epitomizing the essence of a ceremony. The Pabellón (pavilion) del Dia de los Muertos is meant to create a space for individuals of the Mexican diaspora to honor their loved ones and connect with the realm of the dead. This project initially challenged me to create a series of spaces using a prescribed kit of parts, and then to create a detailed site section in a natural landscape.
